Alopecia Areata
This is an extremely common condition that does not discriminate and will affect 1-2% of the population worldwide. It can occur at any age and affects males and females alike. It is considered an autoimmune disease in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from foreign intruders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the structures from which hair grows. This type of hair loss appears in various degrees of severity – from small, round patches of hair loss that regrow without medical treatment, to chronic, extensive hair loss that can involve in the loss of all hair on the scalp (Alopecia Totalis) or all hair on the body (Alopecia Universalis) . Most sufferers are children and young adults. Although the hair loss is sudden, there is every chance that your hair will regrow with or without treatment, but it may also fall out again. It is extremely difficult to predict when it might regrow or fall out again.
