Female pattern baldness, also known as Androgenetic Alopecia, is one of the most common hair loss conditions and affects an estimated 40% of women worldwide. The majority of women with female pattern baldness have diffuse thinning which begins with a slight recession at the front hairline followed by thinning on the crown of the head.
This is due to increased hair shedding or a reduction in hair volume, or both. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed and become smaller and smaller with time but rarely progresses to complete loss of hair. Just as in men, the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) appears to be to some extent to blame for the miniaturization of hair follicles in women suffering from female pattern baldness. Female pattern hair loss typically starts at the age of about 30, albeit the thinning hair usually becomes more noticeable around the age of 40.
